Each year, RCCD members come together to help organize this massive event, sorting and selling thousands of donated books. Proceeds from the sale fund Calgary Reads' essential literacy programs, making a tangible difference for children and families in our community.

Volunteering at the Big Book Sale is a fun and rewarding way to give back. Whether it's arranging books, assisting shoppers, or creating an inviting atmosphere, RCCD members and volunteers play a key role in the event's success. Together, we turn the power of books into brighter futures!

Early Literacy for a Brighter Future

The Rotary Club of Calgary Downtown proudly supports initiatives that foster early literacy and ensure every child has the opportunity to read by Grade 3. Through grants from the Calgary Reads Big Book Sale proceeds, we are helping to create lasting impact by funding innovative literacy programs and collaborations.

Projects like the Book Bank, led by the University of Calgary, distribute thousands of books to children furthest from opportunity through community agencies. The Seedling Readers initiative will gift a children's picture book that celebrates the joy of reading, created in collaboration with local authors and literacy partners. We also support the Left Unread movement, which advocates for every child's right to read. Vibrant Communities Calgary and other literacy champions are amplifying this campaign by sharing powerful lived-experience stories to raise awareness.

Together we are building a system that ensures literacy for every child.

Education

The Rotary Club of Calgary Downtown is committed to advancing education through scholarships, mentorships, and funding for schools and youth programs. Supporting Youth Centres of Calgary

The Rotary Club of Calgary Downtown (RCCD) is proud to support the Youth Centres of Calgary (YCC), a vital resource for at-risk youth in underserved communities. Operating as a “home away from home,” YCC provides a safe, welcoming space for kids aged 9 to 15 during critical after-school hours and summer months. Through mentorship, homework help, arts, sports, and music programs, YCC nurtures resilience, self-confidence, and meaningful connections with positive role models. By funding and supporting the opening of a new centre in Forest Lawn—RCCD helps bring hope and opportunity to youth who need it most. YCC's programs offer critical early intervention to address issues like poor mental health, disengagement from school, and exposure to negative influences. The centre provides daily hot meals, healthy snacks, and free access to sports teams and summer camps, ensuring kids have the support and resources to thrive. RCCD's involvement reflects a deep commitment to empowering Calgary’s youth, reducing community risks, and improving quality of life for future generations—one child at a time. Together, we’re building brighter futures and stronger communities..
